ENGLEWOOD — Tumbleweed Restaurants, Inc., closed three of its Dayton area restaurants Monday including one located at 9190 N. Main St. in Englewood. The other two are located at 2030 E. Dorothy Lane in Kettering and 1865 W. First St., in Springfield.
Tumbleweed also closed a location at 7484 Turfway Road in Florence, KY on December 9, 2013. At the time of the Turfway Road closing, Tumbleweed operated 32 other restaurants in Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana.
With the closing of the three Dayton area locations and five others, Tumbleweed will have 24 Tex-Mex Grill and Margarita Bar type restaurants in operation in the tri-state area. Founded in the Louisville, KY area in 1975, at one point the business operated 42 restaurants in Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio.
The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March 2009 in an attempt to restructure a $17.5 million debt with GE Capital of Arizona. Tumbleweed had been in negotiations with GE Capital for 15 months trying to resolve the debt issue prior to filing Chapter 11. A company spokesman said the recession started to take its toll on the casual dining industry in December 2007.
This was the second well-known restaurant chain to shut its operations in Englewood. In September 2013 Kentucky Fried Chicken closed its restaurant at 590 S. Main Street. City officials said they were not contacted by either business prior to the restaurants ceasing operations.
